Autumn/Winter 2010
season programme announced

Bristol Old Vic has announced its season of work for Autumn/Winter with a programme inspired by imagination and play.

Kneehigh's classic show launches its Autumn tour at Bristol Old Vic
The season kicks off with the eternally childlike Kneehigh Theatre and their fresh revival of The Red Shoes.  Part of the company's 30thAnniversary Tour, this was the first Kneehigh show ever presented at Bristol Old Vic back in 2002, and so these performances are a very special return for this much cherished piece. For audiences who have loved Kneehigh's more recent work, like Don John and last Christmas's Hansel and Gretel, here is a chance to see where the internationally adored company's work first began.

Christmas sees Tom Morris, Neil Hannon and Helen Edmundson create a brand-new musical version of Swallows and Amazons for the Theatre, whilst Bristol favourites Travelling Light and Champloo combine forces to create Boing! a studio dance piece for little ones and their families
Christmas sees two world premieres from brilliant storytellers of the past and present.

In the theatre, Tom Morris directs a major new musical adaptation of the classic children's adventure Swallows and Amazons. With music by Divine Comedy front-man Neil Hannon and book by Helen Edmundson, Bristol Old Vic will transport family audiences to a fantastical place this Christmas. This will be Tom Morris' second production for Bristol Old Vic after his Juliet and Her Romeo broke box office records last spring.

Boing! who can sleep on Christmas Eve? will be shaking the Studio to the rafters with a playful look at the excitement of Christmas Eve. Continuing their tradition of bringing enchanting shows for children to Bristol Old Vic, Travelling Light have been working with Champloo Dance to create a new piece of dance theatre to get your feet tingling, your toes tapping and your head spinning with a whirl of colourful images and playful sounds.

Bristol's theatrical powerhouses join together to produce The Misanthrope
After the sell-out production of Uncle Vanya last year (which is currently enjoying an acclaimed revival at the Galway Arts Festival), Bristol Old Vic is once again collaborating with Shakespeare at The Tobacco Factory. Moliere's great comedy of manners The Misanthrope is a biting and playful satire on 17th Century French society and will be directed by SATTF Artistic Director, Andrew Hilton.

Bellowhead to launch Album at Bristol Old Vic
Following their riotous sell-out gig in February, BBC Radio Folk Award-winners Bellowhead return to open Winter Song with the launch of their latest album, Hedonism.

Virtuoso beat-boxer Shlomo presents Boxed
Beat-box wunderkid Shlomo returns with some more slick vocal gymnastics in his theatre/beat-boxing fusion Boxed. After having set the theatre alight during a scratch version for Mayfest this spring, Shlomo is back with his ten-strong crew for an extended run during Winter Song.

Tim Crouch's sensational Royal Court debut The Author headlines the lnspiring Visitors strand
Bristol Old Vic's Studio season presents some of the best talent from Bristol and further afield. Including Tim Crouch's new play The Author, a controversial look at the harm carried out in the name of art, the renowned Inua Ellams, a poet of startling imagination and compulsive story-telling, with his latest play Untitled; the visually startling Under Glass from Clod Ensemble; Ivan and the Dogs which had its first public reading during January's Ferment and the return of White Caps from Champloo dance company, one of Bristol's emerging treasures.

Bristol Jam returns for ten days of improvisational brilliance
This ten-day festival of chaotic brilliance is taking over the building once again with a range of spontaneous performance from comedians, theatre-makers and musicians of global stature. Jam will include Improbable Theatre's Lifegame, where the reminiscences of an on stage interviewee are brilliantly recreated in the moment, and the return of Showstopper! The Musical, where audience suggestions help create a full-blown and completely unique musical each night.

Award-winning Young Company's next production
Bristol Old Vic's award-winning Young Company returns to the Studio in November, giving another classic story a characteristically contemporary take. Their Jason and Medea is no tale of gods and monsters, rather an East-End gang heist with a 60s soundtrack.

Ends.
Date of issue: 15 July 2010
