The Redevelopment

The Theatre Royal Bristol is one of the finest examples of a Georgian theatre still in existence. The Grade I listed building, and surrounding complex, will be refurbished and redeveloped to support the revitalised Vision of Bristol Old Vic.

A major redevelopment of the Theatre Royal Complex is underway, and will include: complete refurbishment of the Theatre Royal and Studio auditoria; re-invention of the Paintshop as a flexible rehearsal and performance space; creation of a new Heritage Resource Centre; establishment of a dedicated Education Centre; construction of a Professional Development Centre for the performing arts; and extensive remodelling and expansion of the existing foyers, rehearsal spaces and technical and administrative facilities.

The project will make the Complex fit for purpose in the 21st century, and ensure compliance with DDA regulations, whilst not disturbing the significant heritage aspects of the Theatre Royal and Coopers’ Hall.

Our new Vision will be fully supported by expanded and reconfigured performance and rehearsal spaces. We will build a company rooted in its community, with an international reputation, through a process that will be artistically driven, managerially achievable, and financially sustainable.

We are committed to an agenda of nurturing and developing new talent from all areas of the community, and in all areas of the performing arts industries.  Education is central to our plans, including National Curriculum programmes with local schools and colleges, and the continuing development of Bristol Old Vic’s Young Company, for performers and technicians aged 7-21.

A Heritage Resource Centre will provide an invaluable new academic and community resource, accessible to all, which will chart the life of the theatre and allow full public access to our rich heritage. The latest digital possibilities will be employed to recreate the sensation of being at the heart of a vibrant producing theatre as it has changed and developed over the previous 242 years.

The total cost to redevelop the complex is £19.1m, and to date a total of £6.1m has been raised (£2m from Arts Council England, £1m from Bristol City Council and a further £3.1m from trusts, companies & individuals). Funding sources have been identified for the remaining £13m, and work has started to secure these funds and ensure the completion of this exciting, vital project.
