Blah's Big Weekend

back to shows

Presented by Bristol Old Vic, Tangent Books and Anna Freeman
Part of Blahblahblah and Bristol Old Vic's Studio Walkabout Season

After the success of last year's brilliant word-filled bonanza, Blah's Big Weekend returns for a three day festival packed with performances, workshops and one roaring stand up and slam.

Featuring the biggest headliners of poetry and spoken wordery including the likes of Vanessa Kisuule, Tongue Fu and Roundhouse Collective's Cecilia Knapp and Bohdan Piasecki, we hope you come and grab a drink, settle in with some cake and fill your ears with words. It's going to be a blinder.

All shows take place at The Wardrobe Theatre unless stated otherwise.

Blah's Big Weekend

Tongue Fu
17 Mar
8pm
£10/£8 conc.

To kick off Blah's Big Weekend, we're lining up the fattest, juiciest, most brilliant poets and letting them loose to make magic. Tongue Fu is one of London's liveliest and best attended spoken word nights. A wild, playful, poetry party, where no one knows quite what will happen until it happens. We can't wait to bring poets performing with an off-the-cuff musical backing from the brilliant Tongue Fu band, it's a riotous experiment in poetry, music and improvisation; frequently surprising, sometimes hilarious, often poignant and always unrehearsed.

Writing Workshop from The Roundhouse
18 Mar
12pm
£8
(includes free entry to the Finding Home matinee performance)

Finding a way to tell your story or articulate your thoughts, whatever they may be, is empowering and vital. Come and take part in this workshop led by the Roundhouse Collective's Cecilia Knapp and Bohdan Piasecki and discover your unique voice as a writer. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned veteran, Cecilia and Bohdan will guide you through a session that will allow you to generate new writing in a safe, fun and supportive way, and look for the poems that only you can write.

Finding Home - Cecilia Knapp
18 Mar
2pm
£7

Through humour and moving storytelling Cecilia Knapp shines a light on how we deal with loss, how we talk about mental health, and explores what it is like to grow up amongst these things. We meet the characters that have influenced her, listen to her old cassettes, hear her story and discover how she found home amongst chaos.
Directed by Stef O'Driscoll (Nabokov, A Tale From A Bedsit, Kate Tempest's Hopelessly Devoted) and with music from world champ beatboxer Bellatrix and Tongue Fu founder Chris Redmond, this is one evocative spoken word collaboration not to miss.

Vanessa Kisuule
18 Mar
3pm
Free

With her old-school typewriter at hand, multiple-slam winning performance poet Vanessa Kisuule will be creating your very own tailor-made poems, on a subject of your choice, totally free of charge. Having represented the UK in two European Slam Championships in Sweden and Belgium, come sit back and relax as she pens your personalised poem while having a natter about anything you like; poetry, the world, or even how she finds such brilliant stuff to stick in her hair.

Stand up and Slam
18 Mar
8pm
£10/£8 conc.

Easily one of the best things about this year's Edinburgh Fringe, SUAS will be bringing six phenomenal acts to Big Weekend and going head to head for your approval as poetry and comedy collide with unexpected and hilarious results! Our resident team captains are joined by the most exciting comedy and poetry acts from around the UK, mashing up the two art forms in an epic battle of spoken word. Who wins? You decide...

More from Blahblahblah

In summer 2016 we began redevelopment works to transform our King Street entrance into a welcoming, vibrant space and build a brand new Studio theatre designed by award-winning architects Haworth Tompkins. During this time, it will be business as usual in the Theatre with our brilliant programme on offer, and we're taking our Studio programme on Walkabout around Bristol!

Blah's Big Weekend continues our Studio Walkabout Season, inspired by the city-wide partnerships created during the Theatre's first phase of refurbishment in 2011 which saw us stage productions in other venues including Coram Boy with our friends at Colston Hall.

Please note the venue of this show, and we hope you will join us as we stretch our legs across the city and continue to enjoy our brilliant studio programme.
