By Friday 7th May 2010 we’ll all be getting used to something new, be it in Yellow, Red or Blue…
But casting ours eyes away from the ballot boxes and focusing on Bristol Old Vic brings a view of Mayfest. For a month, Bristol will host some of the most contemporary and exciting new theatre happening at the moment.
Friday night will see in the festival in style with an opening party being held at Bristol Old Vic. Last year this was a raucous affair and this term should be no different. The eclectic mix of old furniture, typical of the Mayfest make-over, is in place and the little stage area in the Stall Bar erected. All we need now are some willing participants to grab a drink, mingle and be merry. All in the name of Mayfest.
Come along for a right old laugh, and grab a brochure while you’re here so you can start to plan your shows. That’s an event in itself!

Twenty-three year old Richard Milward’s play Apples, coming to the Studio in late June, promises to lift the ‘hood’ on youth culture, delving into the fears, desires and confusions of teenagers in the noughties.
Five fifteen year olds speak poetically about a world free from adults and responsibility, where vice is always ready at hand. A discussion on whether the definition of contemporary youth is being old before your time?
This young writer brings an authenticity to the subject matter as a front-line soldier in the ‘now’. Containing strong language and violent content, Apples is set to lay bare the vulnerability behind the stereotypes. The show is not suitable for under 14s, but the messages are current and specifically relevant to an older teenage audience.

Our very own Simon Godwin’s Far Away is drawing ever nearer with previews starting on May 24th, and its themes are even more current. With a general election at the fore-front of our collective conscience – the question’s posed in Caryl Churchill’s play will not only add fuel to discussion, but also provoke reaction from a selection of the country’s leading speakers and artists after each evening show. Guests include Jon Snow, Jonathon Porritt, Greta Scacchi and Max Stafford-Clark.
What values do we truly hold most dear when the world we know is changing forever?
Bristol Old Vic is stamping a sense of playful temerity on Bristol’s flourishing theatre scene, and Far Away promises continue the trend with an entertaining and engaging combination of politics and theatre.
In addition, the centre-piece of Far Away involves a ‘fatal’ procession of almost a hundred local volunteers in preposterous headwear… hats off to them.

The sun is shining (at least occasionally) and the spring has sprung, which can only mean one thing - Mayfest. And this year’s line up promises to be both playful and audacious. There is no better atmosphere at Bristol Old Vic, than when Mayfest is in town. A real sense of excitement generated by so many creative minds pulling in the same direction.
This year we are being treated to a feast of performances, including a four-storey high hotel on the waterfront with an open side so audiences can watch, and eavesdrop on via headsets, the lives of the guests. It’s this kind of thinking outside the box which really defines the ethos of the festival. Also on offer is Trilogy, by Nic Green - a dance performed by volunteering naked women!
Be it for the shows, or the atmosphere - or even for the funky old antique furniture which adorns the cafes, MayFest is about transforming the theatre into a hub of alternative, creative art. And its reach spreads further than just our fourth wall. The Tobacco Factory, The Brewery and a host of non-theatre performance spaces will all be getting in on the act and providing a wide spectrum of live experiences.
It is impossible to get a clear view of the scope of Mayfest without a brochure, so get yourself down to the theatre, grab one and a coffee and get choosing!

5 nights, 5 new writers… 5 brand new stories.
The Bristol Old Vic Writer’s Room lights the touch paper next week with Short Fuses, playing from Tues 20th to Sat 24th April 2010 (£12/£8 concs). The show comprises of five short plays written by emerging talents from around the South West, which follow the theme of ‘The State We’re In’. The Writer’s Room is an invaluable resource and outlet for the region’s wordsmiths and has already provided some fantastic work this season.
The latest instalment promises five urgent, twenty minute pieces which interpret ‘The State We’re In’ in a myriad of different ways. Be it politically, personally or with tongue in cheek, these contemporary, never-before-seen works are the perfect dish for those of you who like their theatre served fresh.
Running alongside Short Fuses is The Writing On The Wall, a collaboration between UWE, Pervasive Media Studio and Bristol Old Vic. The words from this five minute script are projected in sequence on the walls of the Basement space as actors perform it. Not a bad starter for a night feasting on bite size theatre.
