A Bristol Old Vic production
Adapted & directed by Neil Bartlett
A strange meeting in a churchyard sets in motion a chain of events that will shower a young man with money, break his troubled heart and lead him deep into a labyrinth of deception and discovery. Great Expectations is a story about transformation, loss and - ultimately - forgiveness.
Adapted by Neil Bartlett, designed by Michael Vale (Peter Pan), featuring a haunting soundtrack by Timothy X Atack (Sleepdogs) and lit by the award-winning Rick Fisher, Bristol Old Vic's new staging of this dark-hearted classic uses the magnificent language of Dickens' original as the spark to ignite a bold new piece of ensemble theatre.
Director and adaptor Neil Bartlett has worked with some of the biggest risk-takers of contemporary theatre - Improbable, Complicite, Handspring - as well as making the original pieces that have earned him the reputation of being one of this country's most individual creative voices. This new staging of Great Expectations marks his first return to Bristol after training here at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1981.
a fabulous evening in the company of two great storytellers - Dickens and Bartlett. "
Tiny points and tweaks of the text flash new understanding; the stark staging gives it rare power."
a sinewy and compelling interpretation"
