By Molière in a version by Tony Harrison

Alceste is passionately in love with Célimène, but just as passionately out of love with the intrigues and insincerities of the fashionable world of which she is the brightest star. Can he persuade her to retire to a life of rural simplicity, or be persuaded himself to accept his fellow men in all their hideous imperfections?

Tony Harrison's celebrated version, fizzing with wit and invention remains the finest translation of Molière into English. This marks the second collaboration between Bristol Old Vic and Shakespeare at The Tobacco Factory after the sell-out success of Uncle Vanya in November 2009, which subsequently transferred to The Galway International Festival recently.

Praise for Uncle Vanya:

'Chekov doesn't get much better than this.'

The Daily Mail

'This truly is the most wonderful production.'

The Times *****

'A landmark production.'

Mail on Sunday ****

'I left Bristol with all my old wonder and delight in Chekhov fully restored...Andrew Hilton, who's acquiring so many feathers in his cap as artistic director of Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory that he almost resembles a new species, beautifully serves that integral sense of mayhem and dislocation in a production that tips this way and that between perturbing nightmare and aching dream.'
