"How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!"

Arthur Miller's theatrical masterpiece The Crucible returns to the stage of its 1954 British premiere at Bristol Old Vic to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Written at the height of the McCarthyist witch-hunts in 1950s America, Miller's play plots the brutal self-destruction of a fragile Puritan community obsessed by the fear of witchcraft. A timeless moral parable, it has a habit of unmasking the fears and hypocrisies of any age in which it is played.

Bristol Old Vic's Tom Morris (Juliet and Her Romeo, A Midsummer Night's Dream, War Horse) directs a major new revival of this hugely influential work, holding its terrifying mirror up to the prejudices and narrow-minded certainties of today.

The intimacy of our beautiful Theatre will be enhanced with on-stage surround seating in a configuration never before seen at Bristol Old Vic, bringing audiences startlingly close to the action of one of the most powerful plays of the twentieth century.

Tom Morris will collaborate on the show with George Mann, Bristol Old Vic's Associate Director (Theatre Ad Infinitum) and award-winning designer Robert Innes Hopkins (Neville's Island, Speed The Plow, Clybourne Park, Swallows and Amazons).

Morris' directing is symphonic, phrasing the play into building crescendos before cutting to the quiet of a single candle."

THE INDEPENDENT

The evening conjures a chilling sense of a god-fearing, prayer-intoning, puritanical community, reeling from blow after blow."

THE TELEGRAPH

Tom Morris' riveting production discovers plenty of modern import in Miller's great work, while retaining its power to shock"
