"547 days. Your country called you up, and you came. Forget about personal liberty, forget about personal space, erase the word personal from your vocabulary. You must become a unit, a sleek, beautifully ironed, nicely polished, aesthetically pleasing machine."
National service in the UK ended fifty years ago, but teenagers across the world are still conscripted into the armed forces. The Grandfathers follows eight boys through training and onto the battlefield.
RIOT forms part of SPRING, a coming together of
exceptional work by young people. Bristol Old Vic's Young Company has
met with astonishing success over the last two years with sell-out
shows, touring productions, invites to play the National Theatre and our
other Outreach projects - be they our Made in Bristol scheme, our work
in schools and communities or our programme of workshops and activities
for all - are going from strength to strength.
SPRING is a celebration of the achievements of those young people.
The production of The Grandfathers, by Bristol Old Vic Young Company (in partnership with St Brendan's 6th Form College) is the best I have seen in 10 years of the National Theatre's Connections festival. It's thrilling to see a group of teenage actors rise with such conviction to the challenge of an exciting script."
