Writers' Room

I was fortunate enough to have my latest play put through a rigorous developmental process with the Bristol Old Vic, where feedback and support was nothing short of superb, with a director and actors allowing me to hear the work over a three day process. This has been incredibly fruitful to my own development and has pushed the quality of my work forward in new and exciting directions. Natalie McGrath - Playwright
Acting as a catalyst for creativity, Bristol Old Vic is passionate about providing opportunity and access to writers at all levels of their careers - whether that be the commissioning of a new script, one-on-one dramaturgy sessions for emerging writers or a wide range of inspirational masterclasss and courses for all writers, no matter what stage in their career.
We have a strong and dedicated remit to work alongside writers from the South West, providing a creative laboratory for the region's unique voices, talents and energy. We also commission new work from national and international writers, as well as advising on adaptations and classics for the theatre's varied artistic programme.
The Literary Producer, Sharon Clark, works primarily with writers from the region, building developmental initiatives, forging creative collaborations, offering structured support and identifying commissioning opportunities.
The department also collaborates with Word of Mouth, Bristol’s literary agency, in the programming of monthly spoken word performances at the theatre by some of the most acclaimed poets from the region, the UK and beyond.
